Free Range Piano

An album made from live recordings of improvised piano sets recorded at Free Range events between 2012-2015. Released in January 2016.

Canterbury Session

This recording was curated and convened by the clarinetist, Tom Jackson. This is free improvisation with a quicksilver, mercurial quality.

Eating Sound

Eating Sound is a unique experience whereby food is used to deepen the understanding of sound. Connections are made between timbre, texture and taste. These in turn help to refresh the audience’s perceptions of flavour and sound.

The first Eating Sound event was held as part of Canterbury’s Free Range series. There were a following six events at the award-winning (and now sadly closed) London restaurant The Truscott Arms

Speaking and playing

Around 2016 I started experimenting with speaking whilst playing the piano. This was sometimes comically honest, sometimes pretentious and boring.

Both recordings here were made at Free Range events.

The first was the first set of an evening that featured Laura Jurd’s band Dinosaur on 17th March 2016. There were many people packed into a tiny space and someone passed out. We watched out the window as an ambulance came to pick them up during the second set.

The second was the first set of an evening curated by Zer0classikal featuring a new piece for string quartet and sitar called The Bridge by Jasdeep Singh Degun. In this performance I chose to use text/lyrics that had been in my mind that week:

  • Cloudbusting by Kate Bush

  • Back to Black by Amy Winehouse

  • Nothing Important by Richard Dawson

  • Creature of Havoc by Steve Jackson (Fighting Fantasy adventure game book)

Listen up.

It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.
